....a completely different lens from which to view the world....This documentary about "el maiz" made me realize this. Just seeing the very different respect towards, or understanding of "el maiz" within this community that used to stand in unity not so long ago...and then putting that into a wordily perspective...it's extremely powerful, there's no doubt about that. But, I really appreciated this documentary because it was very poetic in representing all the the aspects of "el maiz"...and I think in some sense, maybe even the different aspects of life....this is probably where the inspiration for this piece comes from....

This has probably one of my most favorite short stories of all time, yet I know I can definitely benefit from reading it a few more times.  I like it for various reasons.

It is a great insight in Post World II LA, a very culturally diverse LA, where I get this vivid image where everyone is kind of cruising around, taking in the diverse and lively experiences, lights, sounds, music and entertainment that the city has to offer. How I imagine it through the eyes of Rycooder, it is a beautiful kind of chaos. It is a chaos where music filters through the air, but this music consists of the different sounds that make up the city: perhaps sounds of conversations, games, arguments, songs and work, and violence. But, it is a city where everyone contributes equally to the culture of Los Angeles.
I like that in a sense, it is a story about music and murder. This can emphasize the idea that nothing in life is permanent; however, the mixture of crime and death with music softens the image and puts value in what I understand to be probably most important: life goes on... definitely still not a "light" topic per say...
I appreciate that the short story itself is like a dream. It's direction is always unclear and the atmosphere that Rycooder sets up seems very hazy. I think that for this reason, I was able to feel apart of it, experience LA for what it once was and I particularly liked the way that he talked about the street lamps..observing them was an old habit of his..."styles change as one passes from one district to another, one era to another. Very interesting for one who travels by streetcar at night"... it really caught my attention and this was one of those moments in the story where I momentarily took a detour and started thinking about the street lamp, while doing some self-reflection....it really must be much much different from a streetcar....
...It's unfortunate that today a lot of what once existed in the "old" LA has been washed out and overlooked by all the Hollywood noise--it really does make me value this beautifully disturbing story even more...still can't quite put the image to my thoughts....

...peregrina

I often wonder how much of him desires to maybe someday go back to Mexico, back to his homeland...but I realize he has bravely put all that aside for us.......and there's a song that's called "el Zacatecano" ......I've kind of come to the conclusion that it's not about what you've left behind, but more significantly, what you have carried with you...and this song is about staying faithful to your roots, that place and people who made you....and I think that this can bring great strength to anyone who truly understands this... y creo que mi papá ya ha llegado a este punto.

I really appreciated this reading because it touched upon many songs that I had heard growing up, but I never truly understood. I remember when I was younger, I would see my dad singing these songs and he would make these dramatic face expressions that I found to be very funny...to me this was actually a bit strange even. I was used to seeing celebrities appearing in music videos on t.v., where the point is basically too look either beautiful, seductive or who knows what, while singing your song......but it is not about the emotion...but maybe a lack of? Maybe if I would have been raised in Mexico, it would have been "normal" to experience this? This also brought me to another point...the story behind these expressive gestures. My parents are very reserved when it comes to their personal lives and my dad in particular, I know, had a very rough upbringing for many reasons and I feel like I've been getting to know his story in little spurts...one way in which it happens is through conversation, most of the time, when sitting at the dinner table (which is a very valuable, and even sacred space), and the other way is through music....songs...lyrics.....the way he expresses himself through a song....it's powerful...and though I don't know I can ever fully understand it, I can very well appreciate it and try to embrace it as far as my inspiration will allow me to...

la cruz...
This piece was inspired by a friend of mine, who's always been like a sister to me...we've always known everything about each other....and yet, ....I can see it in her face, her gestures, she wants to talk--like the old times--she needs to talk, she needs someone to talk to, but the occasion or the time and place don't allow for it. She's been drowning inside, but she doesn't cry for help, she's not reaching out. He's gone, her only love, distant...hearing his name only paints old memories of what once seemed clear, what was once a perfect picture. But who could've seen it coming? Life is certainly full of surprises. It's a personal journey for each individual...
She feels so vulnerable...do they pity me?...she wonders... I can see it in her face, her gestures...it's weighing her down and she's told me she needs to talk...  but she can't. I've never been heartbroken, but I believe we're all given a cross. ..a circumstance or maybe it's a person in our lives that inspires self conflict, maybe even a war within ourselves, or maybe even with ourselves. And it (my cross) is a heavy weight on my shoulders, but when I overcome certain circumstances in my life, I am reminded that I will not be given a heavier load than what I can carry...but it's a continuous struggle...
a journey, very specific to the individual...

farolito...

Both my mom and dad are from a small 'ranchito' in Zacatecas, Mexico called Toyahua. I've been visiting my family in Mexico ever since I turned one and I've definitely grown to accept it as my second home--a small town with a big heart!

My family loves music and I feel a little behind in this area because ever since high school I feel like I've been so focused on my academic life that I've neglected a very important part of who I am, which is why I am particularly interested in taking this class. After I finish studying, I plan to begin to practice music and my singing and maybe I'll join my 18-year-old brother one day, who currently plays in a trio. (I also hope to continue making art!) My mom and dad both play the guitar and like to sing--my mom is a big fan of the 'románticas', but both my mom and my dad love 'rancheras'! I have a 5-year-old brother who started singing "La mochila azul" when he was three and he loves mariachi music and is still singing to this day:). My family loves to do karaoke during family reunions and it's never about who can sing, but about joyfully spending time together, remembering the old times. Family is extremely important to me and coming from a family of twelve children (2nd oldest), I am very grateful for the experience I've had growing up and the especially for the way in which my parents have raised me. My family is a great and talented bunch and I can only imagine what it'll be like to be in our future family reunions, passing on our family traditions...
